Easing the Pain Staffing Strategies to Leverage When an Employee Quits

“I’d like to hand in my resignation.”

No manager wants to hear those words, especially when the person saying them is a key member of the team.  But employee turnover is a fact of life – and when it happens to your company, it’s one you must manage proactively in order to minimize disruptions and find the right replacement fast.  Here’s how.

  1. Ask the team for referrals. When you break the news to the rest of the team, consider asking them if they can refer any qualified colleagues to fill the position. Since “birds of a feather flock together,” chances are good that a person referred by a current employee will share similar personality traits and values, making them a promising “fit” for your company.
  2. Hit the Internet. What did you value most about the departing staff member’s contribution? What were their strengths, and which weaknesses would you shore up if you could?  What were their key duties?  Make a list of keywords; then explore sites like LinkedIn and Monster.com for professionals who fit the same profile and are looking for work.
  3. Consider your temp staff. One of the benefits of contract workers is the opportunity to see how they perform before you offer long-term employment to them. Have a look at your current temp employees to see if anyone offers the skills and personality to thrive in the space left behind.  Not currently working with contract staff?  Talk to your recruiter about bringing in someone on a temporary or temp-to-perm basis to help fill the gap while you find the right person.
  4. Talk to a recruiter. As soon as you have a resignation letter in hand, call your staffing partner. Chances are good that your recruiter knows just the right candidates to recommend, and their prescreening process will help shorten the time between “I’m sorry, I’ll be leaving soon” and “When can you start?”
